In years way past, the Mermen would play in early Oct in the Presidio, with the glittering Golden Gate Bridge as a backdrop. Anyone know if that outdoor gig is happening this year? (Worth dreaming on, anyway!)

I remember one of them (Martin, I think) talking about that not too long ago, how every year they played at Baker Beach because some ranger they knew pushed it through the red tape. They aren't it touch with this guy now, so I doubt they have it planned. They didn't sound like they thought something like this would be approved.

But they aren't too hard to convince. I'll talk to them tomorrow at the Park Chalet if I remember. Come on down if you are in the area!

theres no way they can play in the Presdio now that all that habitat restoration has occurred. The last "Ranger Party" was 1996/1997.

yep, those were great shows, with an amazing view, and little tiny bay waves lapping on the shore. I believe Tim is right, not sure how you'd be able to do the shows since the habitat restoration.

Well, how about OCEAN BEACH, then, eh? No habitat restoration out there yet. Egads they need it!! But, maybe we could get them to do a benefit for cleaning up Ocean Beach/fixing the sea wall/etc.???

Would be tres cool, no? I've been wanting to do something like that for a while.

      See you tonight, Jennalex?

Ocean Beach is Federal property.Thats why the Federal Park Police patrol it.I know some of the rangers for the GGNRA that run the Presidio and Ocean Beach and it would be impossable to get a permit from the feds for a concert at any GGNRA location.12/13 years ago they even tried to kick the S.F.Blues Festival out of Fort Mason. It's nothin' but a pipe dream. And there is some habitat restoration at Ocean Beach, the sothern end,for the Snowy Plover. Also much native grasses have been planted there to provide the habitat for it.The ban on unleashed dogs controversy was because of the plover habitat.Any more questions for Ask Tim?

Hey, Tim, good info! Are you the Answer Man? Hehehe Are you the Tim from the Chalet?

Anyway, Jennalex told me last night that the Mermen gigs weren't actually at Baker Beach, they were at Ft. Point/Crissy Field area. While there has been a lot of habitat restoration at Crissy Field, there are still areas that are like the Marina Green, just open grassy areas. I mean, they have, like, Aloha Festivals or some such thing around there, I'm sure a little Mermen music wouldn't hurt anything. Right?

3 words, permits, insurance, and $$.The original Ranger parties were like sneaking into somebody's backyard when they're not home and stting up a band and a party. The whole event was kinda "under everybodys hat". A bootleg party,so to speak.Ya just can't get away with that kinda shit anymore. For everything you try to do in the city.Theres a line of people ready to complane and be irratated...I am Tim from the Chalet.Being probably the only S.F. native left,I tend to know the histries to answers behind questions regarding the S.F. bay area.
